Being St. Vincent: Annie Clark on The Nowhere Inn | Interviews

So far as the scoring of it, I used to be type of like, “Oh, wait, ought to we get to attain it?” After which I used to be like, “Oh. Shoot, I feel that needs to be me.” [laughs] It wasn't like I shot my hand up, proper? It is similar to, “Oh, yeah, shoot, [I’m] the one one that is sensible to attain it.” What's actually thrilling to me is the theme music, and the songs that Carrie and I co-wrote for the movie. These have been such a pleasure to make.

Inform me about that collaboration. “The Nowhere Inn” climaxes with its title monitor, which explores the movie’s themes of artifice and authenticity on this grand, suitably cinematic key. How did you and Carrie strategy it?

Nicely, Carrie and I really wrote that music in a day. “The Nowhere Inn” is a metaphor for the purgatory limbo house that folks can get to once they let ego drive fully and once they consider their very own mythology to the purpose of desolation. And since we knew what the film was, the theme music received to be metaphorical but in addition descriptive; the primary half, lyrically, is me speaking to the driving force, [a scene that also opens the film,] so we may comply with the street map of the film and reference it within the theme music. And the theme music has the identical logic of the movie, which is episodic and a dream logic. We’re right here, right here, right here, right here, right here, after which we're over right here, then we go right here—it is only a twisting, turning form.

I first noticed the movie on the 2020 Sundance Movie Pageant, the place Lana Wilson’s Taylor Swift documentary Miss Americana” was the opening-night title. This query of artificiality and authenticity inside music/live performance docs was already on the forefront of my thoughts, after which your movie posed and subverted that query brilliantly. How do you are feeling concerning the style of music/live performance docs, simply writ massive?

Nicely, I feel they're very entertaining! I actually do. I benefit from the music/live performance doc as a style, for certain. Initially, I believed I wished to make some sort of precise, straight-ahead doc: “Right here’s live performance footage, right here’s me.” However then I introduced Carrie in, pondering, “Nicely, we should always form it. We should always make interstitials which are just a little extra enjoyable.” And the thought course of behind [it,], after I was contemplating doing a straight-ahead music doc, was, “Okay, I’m commissioning this work. I’m the one who will get to present the story, I log off on the story,  and I log off on the behind-the-scenes issues I would like you to see.” And I stored following this street down the logic of those musician docs, after which I used to be like, “Wait, that’s propaganda.” [laughs]
